FATE workers and the SUTNA union are holding a 24-hour strike and marching to the government, demanding the factory reopen and jobs be saved, arguing its closure would harm national security.

Argentine Tire Workers Stage 24-Hour Strike Against FATE Factory Closure

On Wednesday, March 4, at 11:00 AM, workers from FATE will march to the National Secretariat of Labor, located at Alem 650, Buenos Aires. This action is part of a 24-hour strike called by the Single Union of Tire Workers (SUTNA). The main protest slogans are: "Enough layoffs, no factory closures" and "Defending Argentine labor is defending our families." The strike is backed by a wide variety of unions, social organizations, and retirees. The workers justify their action by stating that FATE is the only producer of radial tires for trucks and buses in the country. In the event of a shortage of these tires due to international conflicts or other reasons, society would be left without access to these irreplaceable products. They argue that the company's owner, Javier Madanes Quintanilla, should either restart operations or sell the company, ensuring the continuity of jobs. The call is for all worker organizations to join as conveners and for all workers to participate in this struggle. The 24-hour strike, beginning at 6:00 AM on Wednesday and ending at 6:00 AM on Thursday, will affect all factories nationwide, except for FATE, which will maintain its current status. SUTNA denounces what it calls the "illegal attitude" of the FATE company, which has been conducting a lockout since February 18.
